Bistcho Lake

Well I don't want to plug up the Where did I fly today thread with a small trip report and a few pictures.
This last weekend my wife let me take a father's day fishing trip. I took my brother and a couple best friends along. We headed to Bistcho lake Alberta. Tapawingo Lodge is the name of the place.
Take just before we left Friday morning.
Image
My wife put this in my plane to find
Image
We had just over 2 hrs of flight time to get there and the boys had fun on the way up.
Image
70 miles out we could see the lake, adding to our excitement
Image
We had read Tapawingos website and read reviews of the lodge. The fishing was apparently awesome. They pulled a 32lb Northern Pike out of the ice in March this spring! Hence the excitement.
The dock at the lodge
Image
We landed on the big strip, not using much and got a ride to the lodge. After a very brief introduction and orientation, and moving into the cabin we headed down to the dock.
First cast and my buddy reels in a fish!
Image
All the first fish were caught within 30 minutes on the lake
Image
Image
Image
The fish came in huge numbers. We didn't go 5 minutes without a fish on the line and often both people in both boats were reeling in fish. A few times we had 3 fish going on lines on a boat! We must have caught 300 fish on Friday. I caught the biggest Pike at 6.5lbs.
Image
And we caught a lot of Walleye in the 3.5-4.5lb range.
Image
We fished until 1 am, and it was still light. This is at midnight.
Image
Image
We went in at 1:30 and played poker until about 4. Whiskey and beer was enjoyed.
Saturday started early with 2 of us fishing off the dock. Caught 6 right away. After breakfast we loaded up some snacks and beer and headed out. We ended up fishing for 11 hours straight.

The biggest fish of the weekend, 17lbs 4oz
Image
We ended the day getting soaked in a heavy rain on the way back to the cabin. Whiskey and beers were again enjoyed. An example of how many fish we caught, this lure was brand new Saturday morning, and this was how much paint was worn of off it at supper time. Note the bent hooks...
Image
Sunday morning we decided to hit the old Walleye honey hole and again hammered a ton of Walleye. The biggest was 6lbs.
Image
We kept 6 to take home with us. We then headed over to try a new spot for Pike. It was awesome. We let 3 over 7lbs go. My brother caught this just over 8lber.
Image
I nailed 2 11.5 lbers about 15 feet away from each other.
Image
This is the string we took home with us, minus the 17lber. About 60 lbs worth of fish.
Image
A few shots of the cabins
Image
Image
Image
Image
Stopped at high level for fuel on the way home. A flight of 4 SEAT air tractors came in while I was there. Awesome looking planes!
Image
Image
Image
Tower guy was a bit of a tool, not sure if I want to go there again...

All in all it was an awesome weekend and a great time. Fishing was incredible. A great time with great friends. I would highly recommend this lodge. It is not a 5 star place. You have to cook for yourself, and clean up when you leave. Perfect for me!
Thanks for taking the time to read l, not much of a writer I know.

Re: Bistcho Lake

David,

That looks like a great trip! I have been thinking about making a trip up there as well.

How were the cabins? I don't need anything fancy either......I will be taking my dad with me that is 76....

Do they have fridges in the cabins.....and showers on the property?

Thanks!

Hey Kevin. The cabins are nice. Bunk beds. There is a BBQ, propane stove, fridge and sink. Everything you need for cooking is there. Also a wood stove for heat. There is a shower house on site. They sell a few things there, such as beer, pop chips and chocolate bars. Also have a selection of lures. There is 3 big coolers full of other groceries that other groups have brought in and left. These coolers were open for anyone to use free of charge, and the selection was very good. Also a community freezer to freeze any fish you keep.
The strip is in great shape. 206s in and out of there no problem.
Where are you based out of?

Re: Bistcho Lake

Nice work, David! I'd rather see good trip reports in their own thread anyway. Glad you are feeling better these days and flying again.

Thanks Kurt. The lodge is on Bistcho lake. It's right in the Northwest corner of Alberta.

Glad to see you out of the farm equipment and on the lake David. Very nice write up, looks like a place the west siders need to visit.

SEAT = Single Engine Air Tanker. The AT802 holds 820 gallons of retardant, the amphib version adds another 70 gallons in each of the floats. VERY cool airplanes!

Re: Bistcho Lake

David,

Great story.

When I first saw your plane I thought I was looking at Dale's. Similar colour scheme. Then I realized the tail dragger was a dead giveaway.

Thrilled to see you up in the air again. Looks like some good fishing. You have to love the lack of crowds that come with the northern lattitudes.

Looks like you kept some of each fish. How do walleye and pike cook up?

Haha. Dales red is a little darker. And I don't need canards because my third wheel is on the right end! [emoji12] Haha!
We kept 6 Walleye and 4 Pike. About 60 lbs worth of gutted fish. They cook up really good. They are real tasty when the water is still cold. A lot of the lakes around are shallow and by mid July the water is getting fairly warm which makes the jacks taste very sloughy. But a little butter and garlic and they taste pretty good fried up.
The lack if crowds up in our neck of the woods is great. Can't get in as much trouble. Haha.
