Troy Hamon wrote:Choss...there are places to land, but there may not always be fuel. If you have the option of adding an aux tank, then you would also have the option of carrying the bushwheel bags or similar. Either is more than adequate. There are lots of airports scattered along the way that we usually don't mention. I don't know what the fuel availability is at Haines Junction, Silver City, Burwash Landing, or Beaver Creek, for example. Those are the airports between Whitehorse and Northway. But if you need fuel, you have lots of places to land. If yo have the fuel on board, that's great, just dump it in and off you go. If you don't have the fuel, but you have the bags, you might be able to beg a ride to the gas station and back. A lot easier than begging a ride and having to beg somebody to also find you a fuel container.

I asked about fuel as I was overflying Teslin last spring. The guy at the airport was willing to lend me his car, but he had no fuel containers and no idea where I would be able to round any up. I didn't really need the fuel, but I was getting close to the point where my landing at Whitehorse was going to be with 30 minutes of fuel. I like to operate with more margin than that.

Thanks, yeah I have 1 fuel bag, and I bet if I got another one it would be pretty doable and increase my range a bit. In a pinch I can always use regular unleaded. This is when I get jealous of guys in their Maules!

Re: BCP AK Caravan: Poll

Just some thoughts after reading this thread..

The videos were amazing. I played the Powerball Lottery this week, but ...yeah but... :D

I voted in the poll and figured hey...maybe 2-3 years from now. I was amazed that this category garnered the most votes. I guess so many of us are trapped in our jobs, have limited time off, and more.

Looks like most folks are flying Cubs ? I just was curious so that if I ever did undertake such a caravan to AK I would not be facing a squadron of Bearhawks barreling up to PANC at 150 knots.

Great thread...I hope the 2014 caravan will take a lot of pics and videos. Perhaps some of the BCP die-hards can make this an annual event for us grounded kiwis on the east coast trapped in road traffic.

Re: BCP AK Caravan: Poll

A caravan while sounding like a good idea could have some difficulties. Especially if going up the coast. You will ALWAYS run into some weather going up or down the coast. Getting everyone up and flying at close to the same time will be especially tough. Different skill levels, different capabilities, different routes etc. I can envision a group of planes heading for Ketchikan when the weather goes down. A couple of planes pressing on, Some trying for Bella Bella, a couple diverting to anywhere with an airstrip etc etc. Then the ones who make it to Ketchikan waiting on the others to catch up possibly for several days.

That being said, flying the coast is awesome. you will not have better scenery. I would encourage people to fly that route at least once in a lifetime.

For a caravan I would say the inland route would probably be better as far as keeping a group somewhat together.

Thanks for the input Trent! I had to do a double take to see who posted since you've changed your pic!

Speaking just for myself, I'm in that range 1) to let the kids get a bit older, 2) to save the cash for it, and 3) this summer is already taken up with other plans.

Re: BCP AK Caravan: Poll

After finally getting Oregon 180's trip report read and my trip to Anchorage this week, I got to thinking seriously about this. Came home and talked to Dee about it. As of now, we are going to target summer of 2016 for an Alaska trip with the following year as a backup.

So, if any of the other 25 that responded to that frame are still thinking of it, let's do it!

Summer of 2016 sounds doable for me, too... I won't be upgrading in the next couple of years, and my schedule is only going to get better between now and then! :D

Re: BCP AK Caravan: Poll

Has anyone started thinking more serious about making the Alaska trip this summer 2014? Or is anyone already going sometime?

Just wondering if you guys are still planning on this? I've got my wife talked into joining up with you guys if you go. Would be piles of fun!

I was talking to my dad about it a few weeks ago. We both want to do it, and early summer 2016 should be a good time for us. At this point, I'm in with our 185!

Re: BCP AK Caravan: Poll

Switching gear back to amphib floats week after next, then flying north late June or early July. No hard itinerary yet. Going up the coast. Got some good ideas from cbfraser and 8GCBC. Thanks. Hope to reconnect with some of the great BCPers I met last month in Anchorage.

This will be my first trip to AK. If I love this as much as I expect, then it may become an annual or bi-annual trip, so I could easily be talked into joining up with a group.

Re: BCP AK Caravan: Poll

As of now, we are planning it. Based on past years of bidding time off, I'm guessing a departure around the end of the first week in June and hopefully have a 3-4 weeks for the trip.

*Bump*

It's that time of year again to bid for vacation days for 2016 and I thought I'd see if anyone was still thinking about this. Unless there is a large consensus to go another time, my plan is still to bid time off in June and early July. Anyone else?

We would still join up with you guys on your way through Canada. That timing would be great as we'll have the crops in and be a little bit slower.

Re: BCP AK Caravan: Poll

May or June I could probably go North depending on the timing for 2016. Would be early winter before the return for me.
Have made the trip many times many ways.
Great trip no matter which way you go or how long it takes!!
If for some reason I did not take a bird North, I would sure fill a seat for someone!! Has to be a big seat!!
I keep keep thinkin #-o I could bring the Broussard! would have room for 4+ camp!! =D>

I'll take the Shoreline and coast waterways. Land aircraft need not apply  (I'm a seaplane snob, sorry).
