Caveman 2012 Trip Report

Hi everyone,

I'm finally getting a quick trip report and video done for our fly-in at Caveman. Despite our best efforts, we were much later taking off than we had planned. Finally airborne by 4pm, we were hoping that we could make it over to Mack before all the food was packed up and everyone was gone. As soon as we got into radio range, we learned that there was still some food left and a few people hanging around. Once on the ground, we met up with some friends before they left for Caveman, and then quickly got the kids over to the hanger for a bite to eat. We just made it and were the only ones there eating! Once fed, we headed for Caveman. We had seen Rod and Hunter there and they were glad to see that we had made it and told us they had been waiting all day so that they could unveil the shirts, on which we were featured this year for having won the poker run last year.

On the ground at Caveman, we unloaded our gear and then were summoned to Rod's house so that we could see the shirts before the unveiling. (GREAT JOB on the shirts again guys!) They then told me that I was to do the public speaking for the unveiling. Back over to the lodge and the dinner bell was rung for everyone to come on it. Paula greeted everyone and then had me give a little background on the events of last year that played into the shirt design, then the shirts were unveiled. They sold like hotcakes and were soon all gone.

The next morning, we partook of Gary's breakfast, then headed on over to Gateway to spend the day at the lodge's pool. We had lunch there and let the kids play for a while. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Once done, we headed back to Caveman for the rest of the afternoon. That night, the Caveman Crew once again put on a great spread. It was good to socialize a bit and just enjoy being there.

Sunday morning, breakfast again and then on our way home. After a quick stop for fuel in Huntington, we headed for home. Just south of SLC, we learned that OGD's only open runway was closed due to someone in a 310 that forgot to put the gear down. Well, that bought us 5+hours of waiting for the runway to open on the ground in BTF. No bathroom, no courtesy car, no water, nothing open. Fortunately, there were picic tables and Papa John's delivers! The kids were good and despite the unplanned stop, we had a good afternoon.

It was a fun weekend. It was great to see everyone again and to meet some new friends. Thanks again to Paula, Rod, Hunter, Johnny and Gary for putting on another great fly-in!
