Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

Flight:
There's quite a discussion about Flaps on Takeoff > flap gap seals over on CPA .org web site. Anyone know of a airport that we can have a short take and landing contest at -say Utah-Idaho-Oregon-Nevada -maybe Calif or ??? Don't need to be paved . Need Bar-B-Que to bring everything together - Austin would be good .Let's shoot for April-may or near .
This is my post on CPA

Let's have a meet for all interested to have our own mini Short Takeoff and landing contest.Idaho Back country pilots association meeting in April (I believe) would be good.Same day ,same wind ,same direction ,weight, etc. Maybe a great steak dinner for everyone.

Here's my other post over at Cessna Pilots Assoc. org

Flight:
Since several people have expressed some interest I'm going with some help to try and organize a "Rocky Mt. West Fly in and Bar B Que" or something similar.Say something like $10 buck per plane entry to help defer cost+ Bar B-Que extra per head..I'm looking at near mid April Salt Lake City area airstrip (Near Provo) just a get together with other airplane drivers and there planes.Piper Supercubs against same type etc. Family type atmosphere with some fun events.Maybe a soft ball game or so -or something for the kids/adults. Nothing real serious but a little completion.I suspect a short takeoff and landing contest using different classes of airplanes i.e. 172 standard vs 172 standard or STOL 182 vs 182STOL etc. same power/configuration etc. Same power and weight (sand bags added to light aircraft to make weight I'll bring the scales ) and we'll have a little fun. I expect a say 1-2 day event /get together some camping or fly in and out to motel or home. Simple plaque or certificate for your hanger or office. What do you guys and Gals think. Give some ideas that you'd like to see . Maybe a climb to Altitude and dead stick landing (over airport of course) with precession spot landing etc.

How about the Alvord Desert in SE Oregon? Not too far from Idaho, Nevada, Utah, etc... The runway can be oriented in any direction. It's even flatter than most pancakes. Marks can be scribed in the lake bed. There is little traffic and lots of space, plus it's a great place for aviators to congregate.

Great place, I second that. But here is another that could be good. http://www.airport-data.com/airport/17U/

On second thought, Alvord would be the best, close to Denio Juncion for getting emergency suplies.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

It is difficult to find a better place than the Alvord - fly in hot springs, eternal runway(s), Denio Junct. has 2 dirt runways, 2 paved hwys, cafe, bar, and I have never found alcohol in their mogas, wonderful topography in every quadrant. An event there would be memorable.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

This sounds like a whole bunch of fun. I will certainly show up. The Alvord can be pretty muddy in April. Less likely so in May. This is all weather dependent of course. When the playa is soggy, it'll flip you right over on landing, and if it doesn't, you won't take off until it's dry again, unless you weigh less than 1000 lb and have 31s. Coyote lake 15 miles east is usually dryer if the Alvord is a mess.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

Unless I could catch a ride and help with costs I doubt I'd go, looks like it'd be quite the haul roundtrip for a rental.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

Been thinking about Alvord. The only draw back is that there is a hot spring there. Spent the last 90 minuts trying to get the visual of Bill Reid in the hot spring out of my head.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

So the Alvord Desert experts need to weigh in on this. Is May soon enough for Alvord to dry up.

I guess the best thing to do is just show up for the second day and if you see planes on their backs, just wave and fly on. :D :D :D

Alvord looks great

I didn't know anything about it, so I Googled it.
Here's a good link, with some good, general info:

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

I was at Alvord weekend before Memorial a couple (or three) years back. It was fantastic.

Re: Flaps on Takeoff -from CPA

Tim, 17U "Garn" is closed. I used to do T&G's there but the last time someone had put an "X" made out of 2X4's on both ends. I think the Utah Backcountry guys have a fly in around April at the Ibex Hardpan, maybe we could crash their party? A couple more we can consider is Lucin but I don't know if Ivo wants that much company and Garrison. Garrison is right by Baker, Nevada and Leman Caves are right there too. Been there on a motorcycle but never flown there. The caves are cool. Garrison is run by the Sherrifs Dept. I tried to call but I need to ask the Sherrif. I will try to call tomorrow to see if they would consider letting us come there. We might want to pick a couple in different places that time of year so we don't get rained out.
