Slow?

Has the site been running a little slowly over the past couple of days or is it just me?

Re: Slow?

It's hung up a few times, but that seems pretty normal around here.

Re: Slow?

I am having the same problems. It is taking each BCP page about 20 seconds to load regardless of content. This started about 3 days ago or so.

It's been pretty good on both the computer and my Droid. I don't use Tapatalk. Just the free version. I did notice when you hit the "Submit" button, that's a little slow. I think that's what causes a lot of double post's from some (and I almost done the same). I think they hit "Submit" the first time and nothing happens for a few or more seconds, then they hit the "Submit" button again creating the double post.

Maybe they're just screwing with you, Pat!

That's a pretty good guess! =D>

I cracked a tooth a couple of days ago, and the cold air is excruciatingly painful. I'm getting a crown on it in a couple of days. But, in the meantime, I went down to the bar this evening for medicinal purposes, and now I'm cracking myself up [pun intended]. :D

Re: Slow?

It can't be just me, now. :(

Last evening I couldn't even get the site on my phone. Very slow response and Firefox often times out waiting for the site to load. Skiplane.org and other forums I frequent are normal speed, so I don't think it's on my end...

Mine was fine last night and this morning. I didn't try my Droid though.

Re: Slow?

Over 30 second load time for the last week or more now, again. Things sped up quite a bit until the last week again.

Tell me if this is normal and I will quit bringing up this topic...

Slow?

I have this issue at work but not at home. I would waste far more time on this site if it didn't load so slow at work. Seems like bcp just doesn't like some IP ranges.

Re: Slow?

30 seconds!? That's not normal. Maybe your freakish mutant super powers are kicking in, making your brain so fast that each second seems like a minute.

If all sites are slow, then check to see if your computer is doing anything unusual. Look to see if the hard drive light is extremely busy, if your DSL modem has unusual activity on the lights, etc. If you see a problem, try looking at things like the amount of free hard drive space, the amount of free memory, the number of other programs running in the background, the number of users on your local network and what they're doing on the internet, sources of radio interference for wireless devices, times of day when the idiots down the block are using up all the DSL bandwidth watching kittens on youtube, any evidence that you might have a virus, etc.

If BCP is the only site that is slow, try pinging backcountrypilot.org. (If you aren't familiar with ping, you open a command window and type "ping backcountrypilot.org" without the quotes and hit enter).

Here's my results. Notice my time is 51.5 ms, which is pretty fast.
Code: Select all
kevbert@amd64:~$ ping backcountrypilot.org
PING backcountrypilot.org (69.163.157.112) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from backcountrypilot.org (69.163.157.112): icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=51.5 ms

If ping is slow, run a traceroute to find the offending node.
Code: Select all
kevbert@amd64:~$ traceroute backcountrypilot.org
traceroute to backcountrypilot.org (69.163.157.112), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

Note that on Microsoft operating systems, the traceroute command is conveniently renamed to tracert.

If pinging BCP returns a fast time, but the site is slow, it might be the web server is overloaded (but I'm not seeing it), or it might be an ad on the page whose server is slow (ads come from a different site, they aren't stored on the BCP server) . You can try pinging each of the ad servers on the page, but it's easier to just turn off the ads. I use the firefox browser with the "Adblock Plus" ad blocking plugin installed, and that makes all of my browsing much faster, even when the ad servers are working fine. However, I occasionally use someone else's computer, and I'm surprised how often a page load pauses while it's waiting for some stupid ad site.

If that doesn't help, you'll need to provide more information about the problem.

Re: Slow?

My ping is 83 to 101. Why is Supercub.org mostly in the 20's or a little more? More people looking over there?

Re: Slow?

Ok, just for 58skylane, :D

I've been looking at the site, trying to find for testing purposes 1) a page that is text only, and 2) a page that doesn't have ads. But, it would seem that our cost-conscious leader has put ads on EVERYTHING. Sigh...

So, here's the first test, a non-existant page on BCP. The web server will just return text informing you of the error. This will test how quickly a packet or two will go through the network and get processed by the web server. This removes most of the other variables like ads, databases, etc.
http://www.backcountrypilot.org/fakepage.html

Here's the second test, a half mb image. This will test web server response and network throughput, and remove most other variables.
http://www.backcountrypilot.org/gallery/albums/userpics/10005/2-12-2011_%2830%29.jpg
Edit: if you click on this more than once, it will probably cache it on your computer and not fetch it from the internet on subsequent tries. So, if the image displays TOO fast, refresh the browser (press F5 or CTRL-R or whatever) to make it display again, this time it should load from the server.

If these tests are fast, and the site is slow, then it's probably the web server, database, or ad servers that are overloaded.

If the image test is slow, it's probably the web server or the network.

If the text/error page is slow, it's very likely the web server.

You might be closer to the SC website, or it might run on faster hardware, or a combination of both.

Re: Slow?

The site is working fine for me, but any archived content, like say a google Stinson search, stops cold. Times out.

Re: Slow?

Just jacking with you :D :D

But, this site works flawless with my laptop and the computer at my work. The only thing I don't see on my work computer is some pictures. They have a lot of stuff and webpages blocked.
