We have a Big Agnes Big House, and it's OK, but it's definitely a fair weather tent. The rain fly doesn't cover the whole inner, and the inner is almost all mesh. Fine if it's warm out, OK in light rain as long as it's not windy.

Patrol guy.....sorry to hear about your tent problems but I think you dealt with your wife's comment inappropriately. If it was me I would have saved face by telling her that I ordered it that way because real men don't need anything but a rain fly and that she should mind her own business.

Rob.... Did you hire a stunt double to camp in that expensive tent in the snow and take pictures so we would think it's you? Looks damn inhospitable to me.

I was going to buy a new tent for the trip this year but decided to bring the chingus ebay tent I bought 2 years ago. Damn poor excuse for a tent but if it fails me I can always sleep in the out house at JC.

Dang, looking at JC for the SC fly in. The wx looks similar to last year. yuck. I want to go with the wife but it has to be nice.

I've had Eurekas for years, and love them. My current one is a Polar Storm, 2-person, stands up very well in storms and wind. Problem is that it's hard to put up - only 4 poles, but it's got sleeves to slide the poles through. The tent shrunk a little so it's almost impossible to put it together.

Does the clip-style hold up as well as the sleeve-style? It sure looks easier to put together.

P.S. Mr Ed: I think Patrol Guy's wife is going with him (last I heard), so the tent is definitely her business.

Hi Denis, ha ha, I am to cheap and those are to heavy for most planes. 42 pounds. They are built for extreme conditions. Look forward to seeing you at JC. Cheers...Rob

Hey Mark,

Last year we got a Columbia Bugaboo family dome tent. 74" high and lots of room (9'x12'). Not the biggest, but it's worked well for us. Not the lightest one out there either (21lbs listed...ours weighs around 17). The write up says that it does well in strong winds. If you don't have the sides open, strong winds will lay it over a bit due to its height. It has worked well for us and we needed the room with the kids. Overall, we've been really happy with it.

I clicked on the link, and once again, before even leaving the house, spent money I shouldn't have, screw it, it's airplane related, doesn't count. Thanks, I guess, GuyWagon

The tipping factor was when I called, expecting some call center/order center in India, instead I got the man himself, and he is in nearby SLC! Bottom line, I'll have it Sat. and will show it off at JC next weekend. It is the largest tent I've ever had, at 84" sq. and 58" high. Also the heaviest at 9.5 lbs, and for sure the most expensive at $344.00. I have never spent more then 50 bucks for your basic cheap dome tent, used them for 2 or 3 years and replaced them with another. This thing will be a huge step up.

The quick setup, even in the dark, (maybe in the dark after a few beers) sounds great, as does the fact you can't lose the poles, we'll see about that.

yeah well after going to JC each summer for the past 11 years I've learned that JC is where you kick back and relax after fishing at all the other strips up there. So I like my comfort and convenience.. My old 8x9 dome gets a bit cramped with a cot and clothes and all the other stuff I don't want to leave outside, and I'm getting tired of doing things with my head hitting the top of the tent..so my Maule is pretty well packed going in there each year... Sorry I won't get there this year. It's been a pretty lean year work wise so I may not get there at all... I like to get up there a little later in the summer as the streams and rivers are not as raging as they will be next week...

I had an "instant" tent, which when I recently set out to dry (without releasing the bend in the tent pole that is has when still "packaged"), I think the sun led to it snapping.

So I just picked up a Eureka Tetragon 9 which the local Sports Authority had for $69! Regular/list is $160. Easy to setup, but untested. People generally speak well of Eureka tents for recreational camping. Its a lot taller in the center than my other, and has a gear loft and a very small vestibule.

Seems interesting, however the only thing holding it up is the wingtip. So if you get winds, and the airplane rocks on the bungees or springs, your tent inflates and deflates while the roof moves up and down.

Probably not secure enough for anything other than calm weather.

I have a Eureka that we used prior to the kids. Light weight, lots of room under the dual vestibules and easy to put up. I love the tent. Just too small for all of us now. Still use it whenever I'm not with the family.

Flight:

Tent size -Tall and big enough to stand up in >>> for me. Last summer I flew the back country of Idaho for a week and half. Camping at Garden Valley and Johnson creek my tent was OK but sleeping on the ground pad was really bad.Had a hell'va time getting up in morning. Several years ago I got a replacement left knee . I really need a something I can swing my legs over to help me to stand up. Short tents just don't let me do that. I've got a double height Coleman air mattress that I can stand with.Several years ago I saw a tent than went over the end of the wing for camping -does anyone remember this ? Over the wing with sides and end ??? .

No I'm not going to Oshkosh -I thought about it but would rather go back to Cabin Creek,Idaho to relax. Cessna 180/185 is mid/late July .

I use that model Eureka tent down here in Nevada all four seasons, and it's held up well and tolerates fairly high winds without deforming.
