Shooting Suspect Hiding Near Caveman Ranch!!!

I went riding (dirtbikes) last weekend in the Whitewash Sand Dunes between Moab and Green River. We came upon 4 Rangers on Yamaha Wolverine 4-wheelers down in a tight wash. They flagged us down and checked our tags, yada yada. We ended up having a nice conversation with them. One of the guys (Brody) asked me about my KTM and visited about a few of the secret trails in the area. As we rode away, I was impressed with the exchange we had and the helpful tone the Rangers had with us. Much different from my younger days when we always seemed to be run from the big bad wolfe.

Unfortunately, this guy Brody was shot 3 times Friday as he patrolled the Poison Spider Trailhead just outside of Moab. Over 200 police officers are currently searching for this DB thug who ran into the desert. It appears he (DB Thug) too had been shot in the exchange. The news is currently reporting that the focus of the search is just outside of Caveman Ranch!!

Hopefully Rod has a few heaters on stby and can "aid" in the capture

Shades of Claude Dallas.

Hopefully, the people of Utah will take a little different view of this guy than did the folks in Idaho.

It wasn't just Idaho, Claude has friends all over Nevada too that helped him out. I probably would have too, given the chance. I don't condone what he did, but he sure didn't deserve to be forced into the position they put him in either... Who knows what this guys story is tho, I don't think he has lived by the cowboy code like Claude, but I think were still supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, and I probably wouldn't start chucking lead at him just yet. Here in this part of the country, were just raised helping each other out of bad times.

Well I suppose they both shot law enforcement officers, and probably both justified it in their own pea brains, but I fail to see any other resemblance.

I knew Conley casually, but I worked with Bill Pogue for a while. I never saw either do anything that would suggest they were anything other than real professionals. Dallas killed them both by getting the drop on them..going into his tent allegedly to get his trapping license and coming out shooting. If you call that the "cowboy code", then I guess the cowboys I grew up with weren't "real" cowboys.

There was nothing "cowboy" about Claude Dallas. He is simply and plainly a murderer.

I don't know about this guy, and there is no proof as yet that he's even the one who shot the park ranger, but I hope they catch him, and hopefully the truth will come out.

The similarity between the two is a "routine stop" that turned into a shooting.

In the meantime, thankfully the ranger is alive, barely.

I was going to stay out of this . . . until MTV's last post.

Human nature I suppose, when something like this happens, for some with a distain or mistrust of authority to think of the criminal as some sort of Robin Hood. Yet most of these same people, if they actually witnessed such violence, would be disgusted and repulsed by the wanton acts of the perpetrator. I was a cop for 10 years in Oakland, CA. That left me with zero tolerance for criminals like Claude Dallas or this guy either. The fact that CD or OJ got away with murder is a testiment to how screwed up our criminal justice system can be.

Re: Shooting Suspect Hiding Near Caveman Ranch!!!

Hard to believe that some of these posts are written by the same guys who not long ago suggested just flat-ass shooting "barefoot bandit" Colton harris Moore. All he did was break into some houses & steal a couple airplanes-- not kill LE officers. Kind of a wierd double standard going on here.
I don't know about this guy they're chasing now, but I don't really see how Claude Dallas was forced into anything except by his own actions. I know people who've been busted for poaching game out of season-- they did what they did & they took their lumps (forfeited hunting license, fines) for it. Keep in mind, Dallas not only shot the officers with a pistol but made sure they were dead by putting a finishing round (head shot) into each of them after they were down, then went on the lam. Not the actions of an innocent man.

Re: Shooting Suspect Hiding Near Caveman Ranch!!!

Read the story of C.D. in the book "Give a Boy a Gun". Claude was born and raised in Ohio to a dad who taught him little respect of authority, came to the ION area and worked as a ranch hand. COWBOY CODE? It was a rancher who was disgusted with his lawless poaching that called Idaho Fish & Game to do something about him. It was a cowboy who turned him in for trapping bobcats out of season. Claude was a drugstore cowboy and murderer.

Shooting Suspect Hiding Near Caveman Ranch!!!

Someone close to me who I respect very much (born and raised northern Nevada) was on that same Dallas bandwagon. After talking with him for a while it turns out he knew about as much as the defense had placed in the papers during the trial. Plus he is a huge Ian Tyson fan ;)

Pointed him to that same book. Haven't heard much on the subject from him since.

I know folks who are what Dallas wanted to be. They want to be left alone, aren't fans of the law or the government, sometimes try to get away with what they can and maybe they shoot their mouth off too much but no matter who you are they will help you when the chips are down and they are the salt of the earth. Some around here might resemble that remark as a matter of fact. From what I learned CD didn't have that part of the cowboy. He does however seem to be adept at picking good attorneys. The present subject will likely turn out to be similar.

Look at the huge internet following barefoot boy had. I'm embarassed to say that they appropriated the name of one of my favorite Merle Haggard songs (Mama Tried) as their slogan. But from what I've read, his mama never tried to do shit, which is probably the root of his problems.

Re: Shooting Suspect Hiding Near Caveman Ranch!!!

Consider:
LEO shot in back as he returned to his truck after talking with perp. 3 shots within a 3 inch group. Shots penetrated his vest. 2 shots in leg in 1.5 inch group. Emptied 1.5 of 3 clips 40 cal. Took multiple gun shots in multiple body areas. Lots of sign of gunfight around truck.

Perp emptied multiple clips. Was shot multiple times. Lots of heavy blood loss. Drove to end of dead end road. Lots of blood around car. Left car, blood and foot print trail to river, not canyon, not slick rock. Stashed pack containing food, clothing and rifle close to river (why?). Tracks stopped at river. No further sign in the area.

Re: Shooting Suspect Hiding Near Caveman Ranch!!!

so steve is this what apparently happened.. we haven't heard word one about this here in San Diego but then I guess you didn't hear about the two officers shot here in southern Cal either...I only know what was posted here...having been through Moab and most of that part of Utah last summer I can understand why it's so difficult to find anyone in that country... after all they couldn't catch Cassidy and Sundance and the wild bunch when they rode that territory...

Wasn't there some other fugitives that pretty much disappeared in the Utah desert within the last 10-15 years? Not sure the details, but I remember a massive man hunt for a similar situation.

Mornin Pat,and Happy Thanksgiving
Don't remember much of the details, but a several years ago, I think there were 3r that maybe robbed something over in Cortez, small town about 50 miles west of here. They shot a local policeman, and headed for SE Utah. They were hiding in the Mexican Hat area. I think some remains were found.
