So here is a follow up question:

I plan on taking my H&K .40 with me. Any funky gun laws that I need to know for CA, OR, WA, or MT. I don't have my concealed weapons permit, which wouldn't help anyway since some states don't reciprocate. More than likely, it will stay in the aircraft and my tent 99% of the time.

Well if you want info on what you are supposed to do and (hopefully) not a debate...if you are in Stehekin it should be unloaded and put away, since you are in North Cascades/Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and NPS regulations apply. Didn't see anywhere else on your trip where this might apply?

In Montana the open and visible carry of firearms is very liberally allowed; and you can also carry concealed without a permit outside of city or town limits, or outside of logging or mining camps, or if you are one "who is lawfully engaged in hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, hiking, backpacking, farming, ranching, or other outdoor activity in which weapons are often carried for recreation or protection." So long as you aren't in a bank, school, government office, or intoxicated, or where alcoholic beverages are served or sold. Whew! But, no prohibition on carrying inside a vehicle, except in National Park Service areas.

And, the latest "credit card fixit" bill out of Congress will also fix the loaded firearms in National Parks deal it appears. I seriously doubt the President will veto the credit card bill to kill the gun legislation attached to it.

Get a concealed carry permit from Utah. They are recognized in most states. Check around with local firearms training outfits, someone there should be able to provide the training required, and you do not have to be a Utah resident to apply.

In time for NEXT summer, not this one Takes effect in February 2010, same 'ole rule applies until then.

Better get in line. I applied for my Utah permit Feb 21 and it's still not here. Took them several weeks just to cash the check. Utah has something like 33 state reciprocity now. It's a good one, which could indicate why they're backed up for months. Application process is very easy...fill out a form, send a picture (passport size), copy of your driver's license, fingerprint cards, and the form must be endorsed by a certified instructor for the state of Utah. My instructor covered the required topics in one 8 hour classroom day. Oh, application fee is only $65 or so.

Is there an official (online) source of state-to-state reciprocity? I have a washington CCP license but am not sure which other states I'm legal to carry in.

So what does the one day class cover? Utah carry laws I hope?

Nope, primarily they all cover basic firearms safety, liabilities and responsibilities of being armed, etc, as well as general laws. But, basically, they tell you to do the research on each state to find out their laws.

Florida is pretty straight forward for non-resident CCW, has great reciprocity, and is good for five years. As an added bonus, your CCW will be signed by their Commissioner, I kid you not, Charles Bronson.

Well, that is disappointing. I did see a book that looked good that a lawyer put out. It has Utah's carry laws in layman's terms. I think that will be required reading when I get mine.

So, I wonder if any of that course can be waived for law enforcement officers?

Used to live there, be advised that Calif is not the most gun-friendly state in the union. If it stays in the airplane or tent I don't think you'll have a problem in any of these places, unless you get likkered up and/or start acting like an asshole. Not a good idea with or without guns.

It's a short course. The one I took was one evening, maybe four hours. I don't think any credit is given for LE experience.
