My Old Plane Down

Leemer notified me that my old plane had gone down in northern Utah. Everyone was Ok but it looks like a total loss.

At least everyone was okay, but still sad.

That's too bad. It went down about three miles away from my house.

Re: My Old Plane Down

A lot of time and money went into that plane. I'm curious to see what they think happened. I talked to him a while ago and he told me he didn't fly it much. He has a Kitfox too. I would like to see what the insurance wants for the salvage. I could use the engine for a project and it had new interior and a bunch of new gauges. Really sad to see it looking like that but it turned out well since they all walked away. Glad I put in shoulder
harnesses!

Saw that on the news. Glad everyone walked away. I understand there was an infant/toddler on board.

Re: My Old Plane Down

Here's a very detailed video of the incident. Soft fields, trigear and small wheels don't mix. The front end makes quite a crater.

I tried for years to put a 6:00 on the front and 8:00 mains. Perhaps that could have helped in this situation? Hard to say but a Piper landed in a field here just about a week ago and he did OK. It was colder then.

Oh man! What a birthday gift. And her first flight in a GA airplane to boot. Do you think she'll get an attitude about flying?

Re: My Old Plane Down

Anyone else notice the landing was with 0 degree flaps? Stall horn just barely buzzed right at impact?

Re: My Old Plane Down

If I saw the pilot reading his POH for what to do when the engine goes quiet, I'd be pretty concerned!
Even electric flaps are better 'n no flaps! :)

Re: My Old Plane Down

Glad to hear everyone's OK, and very glad to hear that JAERL put in shoulder harnesses. (I'm happy to have played a very small part in that decision)

But Jeez Jerry, couldn't you have at least made sure he put the little plastic cap back on the top of the EZ Flap unit before it's first big network TV close-up?

Glad they all walked away! Dang that poor ol plane didn't roll very far. It's amazing how quickly you can wind up upside down!

Re: My Old Plane Down

Well, Lynn is a nice guy but I talked to him a a while ago and asked him if he had been flying it much. He said he had only flown it a few times and he was thinking of selling it cause he didn't use it. The plane was really nose heavy so I told him to keep the baggage compartment full. We also had 18 inches of snow the week before and it has beeen melting fast because of a few warm days. I'll bet it was pretty slimy under that snow.

I called my mechanic to see if he saw that it was my old plane. He was bummed too. No one likes to see a plane go down but that one was 53 years old and looked better than new. Bill, looks like you can sell an STC for that EZ Flap again! Looks like it survived too :)

Re: My Old Plane Down

There is quite a thread going on Gulfstream Girl's Facebook site about the crash. In memory of my plane I thought I'd put some photos here. Also I think a longer video from the backseat is out now too.
