The Prototype

It's been more than a year since the last update on the innovative prototype DoubleEnder. Ride along in the cockpit with designer Alec Wild as we're treated to a demo ride in this forward-thinking twin-engine bush plane.

The Piper PA-18 has long been the standard for light STOL performance, but the new age of lightweight 180hp Cubs like the CubCrafters Carbon Cub are escalating performance expectations. Patrick Romano wanted to find out how much performance could be squeezed out of a stock 150hp Super Cub without dropping money on an engine upgrade.

In this 3-part series, two pilots ferry a new CubCrafters Top Cub from Washington state to Anchorage via interior British Columbia. Nothing goes wrong. It's an excellent trip and a milestone achieved for the low-time pilot-author.

Halfway around the world from the usual bush flying haunts lies the isolated Scandinavian island of Iceland: the "land of ice and fire", so named for its mountains, glaciers, and volcanoes. This is just as likely a place to explore by bushplane as any in Alaska or Canada. Super Cub pilot Arnar Thor Emilsson takes us on a photographic journey through the northern paradise he calls home.

Two life-long friends set out for Alaska from Colorado in a Backcountry Super Cubs SQ-2, on a simple quest for backcountry adventure and good beer.
