Spam cans mix it up at Valdez

Here's a link to the light touring class heat at the Valdez fly in this year. Not back country but pretty neat stuff. How about a 107' TO in the 170 ?!?

I thought I heard that 170 has a 200+ hp Franklin in it. It sure sounded mean at the show !

Hi d.grimm,

at the risk of starting another "type war" I will offer this: the huskys would have been in the "bush class" which was obviously dominated by lighter or high hp cubs in the hands of guys who work them in the bush... check out Kirk Ellis' impressive T/O and landing in his 4 place supercub... The Maules I belileve should have been in the light touring (except maybe the M-4s going to bush class) The light touring was dominated by high hp 170s
In my opinion the heavy touring offered the most impressive stuff when you consider the weight of the birds...well except for the cirrus
disclaimer; if cubs aren't your thing watching the bush class is pointless
Bushclass:

Heavy touring:

And for the coolest plane, check out Wayne Mackeys cub in the experimental class:

A Cirrus may not be a "Bush" plane by any stretch, but I'm still quite impressed to see that plane/pilot put up an average score of 348 feet.

Bob,

That was one of the things that impressed me most about the heavys all their numbers were quite good considering airplane weights.... after all the t/o is only half the deal, and all the power in the world isn't going to help you land any shorter...the cirrus did look out of place, but you make a valid point, he did a fine job and at least he showed up and joined in the fun!
Take care, Rob

I'd like to see how a canard 182 with double puck brakes would do in that competition. Of course, the Cirrus could have kicked everyone's butt if he'd used the 'chute for landing. :P

Yeah! That's my dentist- He does have the 220 Franklin in it. 2nd time in the winner's circle at Valdez for him, at least. If you're reading this- congratulations! \:D/

How do they determine which class a plane falls into?
I want to know who I'll be up against with my C-150 next year. :P
