Hey Jeremy - let me know when you know. S7Paco may make it that day, unless he is already up in OR. Svanarts can't make the trip. I know there is a gaggle from SoCA going, but I think they are camping in Columbia on the 19th, and going the rest of the way the 20th. I'd prefer to get up there the 19th weather permitting. Then I don't feel like I have to cram a lot of flying in, or feel guilty at just a leisure day at JC relaxing. You'll out cruise me, but we can still make it work.

Rob - wish I could join you guys, but can't make it that long.

My route is usually KJAQ to Denio (E85) to KMYL to JC. But Denio is only mogas, so depending on the range/fuel needs of others, we could do Winnemucca or other.

I just got the Idaho Flyline Newsletter and it does not know of the BCP Flyin? or at least they did not at publication? :?:
June 15–17 Garden Valley Father’s Day campout and breakfast: Bring meat to BBQ Sat night and side dish to share. Breakfast Sun morning to benefit TV Chap of the IAA, call 208-861-6926.
June 14–17 Super Cub Fly-in at Johnson Creek: Usually 100+ aircraft, about 150 people, Dave Kirsten (209) 333-1100.
June 29–30 “Steve Rogers” Treeport (ID22) Fly-in/Camp-out: Spirit Lake. Friday supper, movie, Saturday EAA breakfast.

That's not the point nor the sentiment. There are always people there that weekend who aren't there because of BCP, they are welcomed to any social aspect of the fly-in. However, advertising the fly-in outside our little sphere here would most definitely bring that little airport to a capacity that would push the limits of the facility. There is definitely an optimum turnout, and we can control it by not advertising outside our own website.

You're a BCPer, is it not your special weekend?

Yes, I am a BCP'er and it is a fun weekend. But, as pointed out by two non-BCP pilot friends of mine who regularly venture into JC, it was not a very flattering sentiment.

Sounds like your friends are trying too hard to find offense. Anyone who reads BCP is invited on the basis that it's a posted event. Anyone who doesn't...doesn't know about it because it's not advertised elsewhere, and thus would simply find JC extra busy that weekend.

I posted it as a heads up! The post was copied from the "EVENTS CALENDAR" of the Official IAA NEWS LETTER emphasis on NEWS IE; not an advertisement. Correct me if I am wrong but a reservation is necessary? and IAA participates in the flyin? With that in mind I thought it worth mentioning since the Editor mentioned the Cub flyin that also has over 100 airplanes. Yet Crista Worthy editor was not aware of the BCP event ?? Just checking if Murphy got into the reservation!

I would like to see our fly in not advertised and for pilots who are here on BCP not the whole world. I would add it is ok to invite a friend or two friend. Just my 2 cents worth.

hell it's already over taxed and has been for years at these fly ins... Geez there's only 2 showers and when some of the wives get in the hot water is gone with one shower... when a 5000 foot grass strip has airplanes lining both sides of the runway the entire length wing tip to wing tip it's a bit much but then it's only for a couple weekends a summer... 180's , cubs, and us, and maybe a couple other types are the biggest... I enjoy the cameraderie and seeing old friends every year but I primarily go for the fishing so I'll avoid the big fly in weekends if I can... Now Caveman was a good fly in with just the right amount of planes with no incidents...hopefully it will stay that way.... :D

Bigger is not better, I don't care what the women say. Thats why I will be there Sunday after the Super Cub guys leave. I'll get several days with 1-10 other planes.

I have received confirmation from John McKenna, the RAF President, that a member from the RAF will attend the fly-in on Saturday (perhaps John himself). I am also in contact with a few people from the IAA, and I know that someone will be attending, but I need to confirm this.

We will have a presentation from the RAF/IAA on Saturday (6/23) at 6:30pm (pot-luck will start at approx 5:45pm) to understand who the IAA/RAF are, what they currently are doing, how we as backcountry pilots can help, and what the future holds. This will be a great time to ask questions in a casual, face to face environment concerning the current issues.

On another thread, the subject of JC operations came up and I said I'd repost this letter from a few years ago. Some good information for newcomers and a good reminder for everyone else.

To All Fellow Aviators,

It is our responsibility as pilots to ensure an orderly and safe flow of traffic in and around Idaho’s backcountry airports. The FAA Airport/Facility Directory, the Idaho Division of Aeronautics Airport/Facility Directory, and Galen Hanselman’s Fly Idaho are three sources that provide the most current approach and departure recommendations to the most popular airports. Information passed by word of mouth or over the Internet, although well-intended, can skew these recommendations and inadvertently mislead others into attempting maneuvers beyond their abilities or better judgment.

Recent events indicate that misinformation about the traffic pattern at Johnson Creek is being circulated, creating a potentially unsafe situation. The following is meant to correct any misunderstandings as to what patterns are flown, when, and why.

It was Emma Bryant’s graciousness and generosity that provided the land on which Johnson Creek now sits. The Bryant family, whose ranch house sits on the hill at the south end of the airport, fully supports all flying activities at Johnson Creek. However, they have three requests of those flying into Johnson Creek: First, under normal conditions, make all landings to the south and all takeoffs to the north.

Second, landings to the north are permitted whenever the pilot decides, based on weather and not convenience, that a landing to the south is unsafe or unwarranted. However, offset your base leg to the south and final approach to the east to avoid overflying the house.

Lastly, takeoffs to the south are strongly discouraged: your takeoff path is directly toward the ranch house; you are taking off toward rising terrain; and a marginally performing aircraft, struggling to stay airborne, flying passed their living room window is very disconcerting. In the recent past, high density altitudes led to three accidents and seven fatalities, each aircraft failing to out climb the rising terrain to the south. Unfavorable southerly winds generally occur in the late afternoon when aircraft should remain on the ground until more favorable conditions prevail.

As a courtesy to the Bryant family, we should honor their requests.

One last item: noise is our greatest enemy in the backcountry. Most of the airplanes we fly are noisy and sound travels great distances in the canyons. That sound amplifies tremendously when we fly in formation, make low passes, and multiple takeoffs and landings. Johnson Creek and the nearby village of Yellow Pine represent a cross-section of the local population and those that come to enjoy our pristine mountain beauty. Not all of them are pilots, yet all of us share the same purpose and must find a way to enjoy our pursuits without treading on those of our neighbors.

Please enjoy our airports, but also be considerate.
