Fortymile herd - North of Tok / West of Taylor Hwy

Still trying to plan a caribou hunt for August. I can't go for the Nelchina herd because I didn't apply for a Tier II permit, so now I am looking at Fortymile or Mulchatna.

Does anyone have any pictures in their archives of the Mosquito Flats area or the Mosquito Fork Fortymile River area (top left of page 108 in the gazeteer)?

Any recommendations for wheel plane places to land in Zone 2 of unit 20E? Some of the pictures I see look like they are actually on the ridges of some of the hills / mountains out there but they are either unlabeled or so broadly labeled I can't tell what area they are in. Generally speaking, that doesn't seem like a good idea to me, but hey I am open to anything. If ridge landings are the way to go, how the heck do I tie down?

Any tips for that area are greatly appreciated. I talked to the guys over and Fish and Game here in Anchorage and they unanimously agreed that the westernmost part of 20E, where Zone 2 is on the maps is going to be the best place to go. After last year's slaughter, they didn't have much hope for a good highway hope until the system gets fixed.

That makes me feel better. I always feel like the fool in the room when I ask these questions. That being said, I would still rather ask and get no info than not ask and find out later I should have.

Once I see a few photos of an area, I tend to feel a lot better about going there. Anything helps.

Hi Matt. I had a aerial wolf permit for the area this past winter. The area has a lot of landable hills . I have no pics of the area sorry for not being more help.

Ken, thanks for the input. I will take pictures when I get up there. The hills are all rock, right? If I am there for several days what do I tie down to? Any other tips or recommendations you would guide me with?

Hi Matt, a lot of tundra , the spongy crap we seam to pack in when we hunt. A lot of openness. When I land in the hills, I have buckets I fill with rocks to use as tie downs. The buckets tack up little room and gives some thing to sit on as well as pack things in till you land. . I lost a plane a few years back do to the wind. Tie down the tail as well. I know of another place that is great for hunting. More north.
