Alaska Peninsula / Whitefish Lake and Nikabuna Lake area

Still trying to plan a caribou hunt for August. I can't go for the Nelchina herd because I didn't apply for a Tier II permit, so now I am looking at Fortymile or Mulchatna.

Does anyone have any pictures in their archives of the Whitefish Lake area or the Nikabuna Lakes area just west of Lake Clark that they can link or upload? Any areas where a wheeled plane can land out there? I see plenty of rivers and creeks in the gazeteer but I can't seem to find a lot of pictures on google, but perhaps I am looking in the wrong area.

I really don't want to have to get a different plane than my own and use floats to get in, but that is a last chance option if necessary.

I will post the other area we are looking at in a second post for the Fortymile area.

The Forty mile area is out of Tok , is that right?
There are a lot of places to land on the hills. I might be thinking of some other place.

Ya, I made a second post for that area. I was hoping you might know a couple areas. I am looking for the hills and drainage about 30 miles north of Tok.

If you have any pictures or info, can you post in that one for me please?

Hi Matt, I seen the other post. Sorry, I don't have any pics of the area but hunting Caribou in the area is good.
40 mile air dose drop off hunts in the area and has done so for years. Still a pretty big area. I had a permit for hunting wolfs in the area this past winter. Wish I could be more help.

The AK Peninsula has lots of wheel landing spots. The rub is, those spots may or may not be where the caribou are.

Huge Bering Sea beaches and cinder blowouts, along with ridges offer a lot of places to land.

The Northern Alaska Peninsula Caribou Herd is still closed for business...seems like some positive signs but not likely open for hunting any time real soon. Not sure about southern herd...seems like that one was pretty limited harvest opportunity as well. So the Peninsula is not much of a caribou destination at the moment. Mulchatna Herd is way down but might at least provide a decent hunt opportunity. If you want lots of animals...go north...
