Stratobee: Loved the video. It's the best I've seen in a while.

It's crazy I guess but if I ever had the dough to own a twin it would probably have to be a Baron. But I'd always want to pretend I was in an Aero Commander. Maybe a Shrike 500. Yeah that's it, normal engines would be OK. Forget the Baron. Shrike.

Shrikes are great. And pricy.. :(
I had my eyes set on one of those, but alas, the few copper coins in the jar only stretched to an old 520, the orphan, the first born, the old news.. Sometimes aircraft have a tendency to find you, rather than the other way around. I'm glad she did. I love that her pain-in-the-**s-geared-engines-come-overhaul also make her get off the ground in no time. You get a little good with the bad, so to speak. I don't think there's a twin around that could beat her in ground roll, frankly. Not even an Islander. Maybe a 337.

Here's a lightly loaded 600ft ground roll we did:

But if one really wants a Shrike 500, one should do a Merlyn engine conversion and stick 350hp aside in them. Then one can do impressive short field take off's as well. Not as short as a 520, but then again, who's measuring..

That was great. The engines in your plane do have their own distinctive sound. In the shrike vid you hear prop sound primarily. Yours is, at least from what can be heard on the vid, a warmer roar with less of the bumble bee. Funny comment that; about the card limit making your daily legs shorter. It depends who you are I think. Some buys spend more on lunch than you do filling the tanks. THAT would be nice.

My Wardog. It does incredible STOL, 60° of flaps helps a lot. Machine gun helps clear out a landing area. Have to post some pics of the 185 when I finish the annual.

This helps clear the air as well:

Stratobee, I enjoy your videos, quite an adventure. I started my professional flying career in AC 500B's and hauled auto parts, canceled checks and packages for ups. This was in 1981 and I flew them 5 years at around 3200 hours worth. I could tell a few war stories including how the airplane was very forgiving of a young and dumb aviator. We also had a couple of Shrikes but I didn't like flying them in the winter as it was hard to light the janitrol heater due to the air intake on the pointy nose, keeping warm was a challange in our stripped out freighters. I used to burn 28 gal an hr. at cruise with the 290hp Lycomings. Later I got to fly a 680 and then the 690 turbo prop. I'm very fond of Aero Commanders.

Thanks. Yes, I've heard quite a few people tell me they cut their teeth flying 500's back in the days! They're like big babies come landing and will forgive almost anything. Very stable IFR platforms. Heard they're not great in ice, but thankfully, I've not experienced that yet. Please share your best war story!

I agree. I've been trying to make it larger. Right now it's 2000 x 1339 and it still looks like a gnat.....grrrrrrr. I'll figure it out though. There it is......

Yup.

O-360, 31" Bushwheels, total empty weight <1300#.

Pretty nice flyer, but I'd like to get a bigger prop turning in front...

Hey dude. You also go by JR? If so, we know each other. Did you sell the 172 TW? Haven't seen it at Merrill for quite a while. I had the black bird you wanted to swaps props on a few years ago......lol.

Thanks! Yes, the K35 was traded in on the Sport Cub at the end of 2007 when I decided to simplify my life and go Sport Pilot. Then a couple of years later I inherited my late father's 172, and we couldn't bring ourselves to sell it.

If any of you have flown commercially out of Kotz or Nome, and fly into the village of Deering, then you gotta know Marlene Moto. Marlene was pretty much everyone's village agent, and met all the airplanes to haul stuff from the airport back into town.

Anyways... Dingbat Marlene sends CloudDancer a birthday greeting on Facebook yesterday, and tells him she's enclosing an old pic of him at Deering. Well... It's not CloudDancer, it's an old pic of me and my dog Hoser. Talk about a blast from the past when I saw it.

I just put on my 25x11-4 tires on the cub late yesterday. That resulted in 5 different "off-airport" landings too.
