Another tragedy.......

The pilot and a female passenger died after the Cessna 414 crashed just short of the runway. Apparently, the weather took a turn for the worse as the plane attempted to land. The other four passengers were injured. Details and a couple of pics on the link......

A very sad story indeed. The biggest surprise to me though is that Craig has a Daily newspaper! Holy cow. Other than Mather's Bar and the power plant there isn't anything in Craig!

Very sad, and puzzling. He was flying the ILS- with a DH of something like 1100' AGL if I remember correctly. He was not flying the RNAV.

Airport manager and ground crew reported zero/zero conditions when he attempted to land. Hey guys Craig has a lot of stuff, just doesn't look like downtown Sparks or Virgin street in downtown Reno, yea I call it Virgin street. Craig has been very kind to the wife and I when weather won't let us into 20V.

According to the article, the weather went sour pretty quickly........

[quote]two Pilatus PC-12s took off from Yampa Valley Regional Airport en route to Casper, Wyo., just 16 and 21 minutes before Sunday’s 3:28 p.m. crash. Those pilots reported visibility of 10 miles at the time.

But a snow squall quickly reduced visibility at the airport to less than a quarter of a mile as the Cessna 414A owned by Scott Humpal of Corpus Christi, Texas, neared the runway./quote]

surely when the weather conditions changed, the pilot was notified.......??

Uhhh, yeah. You look out the window and go missed if you don't like what you see.

Craig is a nice blue collar working class town. It has a decent new hospital and a fair sized college. It also has a reasonable golf course and a good airport. Many of the residents work at the nearby mines or the power station. It is surrounded by many excellent working ranches and it boasts some of the best hunting lands in the state. So it's not on par with electric locations like Sparks, but many are proud to call it home.
Like many middle class towns, it has it's share of drug and alcohol problems (most of whom frequent Mather's) but the majority of the townsfolk are good hardworking people.

I've spent some of the finest nights of my life in Craig. I think? It's just fun to make fun of it. Trust me, Sparks is no heaven on earth. I got to know a gal in Craig pretty good. If she could recognize me when I got off work we generally had a pretty good evening. The first time I danced a slow dance with her, she reached around and was patting behind my back just above the belt line and asked me, "Emory, where's yer gun?" Ahhhh yes. Those western slope girls are something else.

This is pretty off topic in a sad crash thread like this. I'm sorry I told that story. [-X
