Go Pro Hero 2 any good for airplanes?

I was doing a self check at the Base Exchange today and noticed a brand new display in Electronics that contained the new Go Pro camera and all the accessories. I've been wanting something for my plane forever. I also ride dirt bikes and 4 wheel so I've always leaned towards the Go Pro but didn't like not being able to start and stop it. I'm curious if anyone is currently using the Hero 2 and how they like it. The demo vids are amazing.

I just got one at Christmas, but with airplane down for extended annual I haven't used it yet. If the WiFi backpack is all that it's advertising says it is, then it's gonna be slick being able to control the camera through the iPad in the airplane.

Remote replaces battery back and will retro fit to older cameras. You can control up to 50 cameras with the remote.

Joe, the footage from gopros I have seen is really pretty good, and the Hero2 has some nice features like varying wide angles based on settings. Claims to have better low light capability as well. It sounds like a pretty sweet rig.

The remote coming out is should make is pretty slick. You will be able to both operate it (record) and see what it is shooting via your iphone/smartphone. For me, not knowing if my Stealth has started recording is annoying as hell. This should solve that.

That said, the Stealth HD170 is pretty cheap now and hard to beat for overall function and value.

50 cameras with one remote? That would be a lot to keep track of. That's great that the remotes can retro fit to an older camera. I already have 2 cameras (1 reg. and 1 fish eye).

In my opinion, the GoPro has the highest image quality of all the current offerings. I use the Oregon Scientific ATC9K because the wife brings them home for free. That's all I can say about that.

However, onboard LCD is a huge deal. You can use it to frame your shots, preview/verify footage, etc. I think GoPro has this feature as part of the optional backpack module.

About a year ago, I was on location for a full on video/movie production site (race track in SoCal) and I was very surprised to see the film crew go from using a $100K camera to a $100.00 GoPro camera. I asked how they liked using the GoPro's (they actually had a box full of them, maybe 20-30 cameras) and they said the love them! They can put them anywhere on a vehicle and the picture quality is very excellent. I'll see if I can find some pictures I took from that day.

I've had a go-pro for several years and taken literally hundreds of videos with it. Dirt bikes, snowmobiles, mtn bikes, and flying. I now have an HD170 Stealth and would recommend it over the Go-pro. The go pro is bulky (but durable), the standard mounts leave A LOT to be desired and it is not as user friendly. You have to buy a bunch of add-ons to make it work as well as the Stealth. Also it does not have the rotating lens. As a helmet cam it sticks out way too far. Cold temps sap the batteries more than the Stealth and the standard display is harder to see in bright sun or in the dark. The go-pros case is bullet proof. I have several videos of me getting too close to trees and rocks while dirt biking and hitting the ground. Not a scratch on the camera. The mounts are not quite so strong. The Stealth uses a standard camera mount so it has a wider range of options.
Get the Stealth with the extended battery and a big SD card.

Looks like time you got the mounts, big card, remote, ect You'd have North of $400 tied up into the GoPro. I'll look into the Drift.

Go Pro 2 ,here some videos.
They were shot at the highest quality so watch it in 1080 HD to see the best quality the Go Pro 2 offers
Will buy a filter to get rid of the prop effect.

I'm still using the 'old' GoPro HDs and absolutely love them, even so I agree with S12flyer's comments regarding the somewhat unsatisfying mounting solutions.
The Hero 2 model appears to be even better - especially regarding the accuracy of the colors and the white balance.
