Hinchinbrook Island

I'm going to start planning my deer hunting trip for this year. I would like to go to Hook Point on Hinchinbrook Island but I need more info.

Any words of wisdom on anything? Everything is appreciated from the positive/negative tide info to the best hunting spots. We are planning on staying at Hook Point cabin if we can.

Where is Hook Pt? I have been into Shelter Bay and the Cabin there was good. The landing area is a low tide only with room to pull up above the tide line. The old "strip" extends well above tide line, but the bush is grown in. Would be great to take some tools and clear things out so it is landable even at high tide. I would think it is visible on google earth? Saw few deer and plenty of bear sign. Matt

You will have a lot of folks from Cordova out there that time of year. Great spot but make certain you reserve the cabin ahead of time (thats if its still even available). Great spot to land as well but again you will have folks out there doing the same. You may also think about Jeannies cove on Montague. Also take your rod as both have great silver fishing. oh...lots of very big bears out there as well... Kind of like Kodiak out there...when the riffle fires the bears come running...seriously!

oh yeah..do you surf? Excellent waves at both!

Hook Pt is the point on the southern side of the island about 3/4 from the western most side. I have landed out there during May Day Fly In, but I guess I will have to look at a tide chart and see where the tide was that day for comparison's sake.

Montague Island, now I didn't think about that there. When you go, do you mostly go from the west (Seward) or the East (Cordova/Valdez)?

I am building a new AR15 for the deer right now 20" varminter flat top. I assume that would be enough considering how small I hear they are, with a S&W 629 .44 Mag for bear defense?

I am a little surprised more people didn't reply on this question? Are there that few deer hunters up here?

You access Montague from any of those places, however...look up Jeanies cove. You can land on the beach, lots of glass balls if you look and great silver fishing in the stream. The deer are not that small but smaller than the typical white tail. Most hunt them from a boat on Hinchenbrook and Hawkins. Access to to the outside baech on Monatgue is really aircraft only. Boats would have a hard time, not to mention the distance. Lots and lots of BIG bears out there. The dinner bell/riffle shot is not so much of an issue out there unlike Hinchenbrook or Hawkins Island....even more so on Kodiak.

I would love to go, but my little Cessna 150 can only land below the high tide line in the wet sand, so an overnighter might be difficult. I have landed at Hook point several times on the May Day poker run, but my tires started squishing in well before I could taxi to a safe overnight parking spot. I have enjoyed hunting PWS for years but always from a boat. Always thought it would be fun to do it from a plane.

OK, I have the San Juan Bay Cabin rented for nights of Oct 5,6,7. It sleeps 6 and as of right now I am by myself, so if anyone else wants to go I would be happy to have you along if you bring your own food/water/supply. The cabin is on me in exchange for helping to haul my kill if you can.

The 2:51pm low tide is a +2.9 in the tide charts and the beach is super hard from what I am told, so your plane should be great Arcticmayhem.

I might even rent a hotel room in Seward for the 3rd and 4th to go beach combing for deer if the weather is good. Same thing as the cabin - you can chill on me for a hand in hauling our kill. (I have a super bad back and refuse to take pills for it)

I will be using an AR-15 with a .44 mag as a side arm. Right now I have a mil-spec Carbine, but I will probably change the upper to a varminter or buy a new gun depending on if anyone comes with.

I would love to bring someone in my plane as well, but I would love even more if the passenger was someone that could teach me a thing or two in exchange for the free ride. Takers anyone?
