Almost bought an iPad

The new iPad feels just right to me. There are a few smaller devices out there that do what you are talking about, the iFly 700 I think is one. But, I think it's pretty limited in scope. The Apple iPad gives you a computing platform that supports thousands of applications, and not just aviation oriented. I'm about to start using Foreflight on mine in the cockpit, and that's all well and good, but part of what I'm excited about is the fact that it's also the thing I can sit down at the airport with and load Internet weather, or watch Netflix on from my tent at JC.

I think you will get used to the device size after a while, that's part of the beauty of it-- the large viewing area. It's just right.

I've been thinking of picking one up to use primarily for flying, charts, weather and such, but know nothing about any of the apps, costs, and so on. Just starting to search forums and read about them. I'd also like to have it set up as a kneepad I guess. Have you been using it in the S2? Are you keeping it on your lap or what?

RAM mount sells a kneeboard-type contraption.

This, plus this.

I switch back and forth between using that, and a RAM suction cup mount depending on what I'm doing or which plane I'm flying. It was hard to find a place to suction mount the iPad in the Arrow II. Thinking about going back to the yoke mount, which is what I was used to with the Garmin anyhow.

FlightPrep lets you load their software on 3 computers. Very handy. To be legal paperless cockpit you are suppose to have a backup. I have a old laptop with the software loaded. Not as compicated as it sounds. Plus AFD, Flight Guide

Rob, I didn't know you had a new one. I remember your old one from the time I flew with you. I liked it but it seemed too bulky for me to use in my current setup bouncing between different Cubs and hopefully my own airplane again soon. I like the looks of your new one!

No Foreflight for anything other than the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. However, WingX is a great app too, which is available for newer full-function Blackberry. The Blackberry version is not nearly as buffed out as the iPad or even iPhone version of WingX.

The only reason I like WingX (for the iPad) over Foreflight (for the iPad) is that it shows color terrain avoidance similar to Garmin. that and they are likely to have real-time weather sooner than Foreflight (we'll see.)

Confused. My iPad gps works fine. Borrowed an external gps for it for a weekend, saw no improvement so gave it back. You have to have the 3G model.

Yep, from the tablet being off until I have a fix on the map is 6-8 seconds. Unbelievable how good GPS's have become. The GPS in the iPad is universally reviled as junk. That's why Apple had to "allow" two other GPS's to be allowed to connect to the iPad. And you have to have a 3G iPad to even have an internal GPS, as bad as it is. You don't even get one in the wifi model.

I have an iPad with internal GPS, works as well as my Garmin. I guess so
I guess some folks just don't like Apple.

The internal GPS in the iPad is good until you turn it off, put it down or for whatever reason you lose the signal. Unless you are flying fairly low where it will receive the assisted help from your local friendly cell tower you are out of luck. The Apple GPS will not reacquire a signal unless you are nearly stopped. At least that has been my experience.
I just got home on vacation and have been setting up my new iPad 2 without the internal GPS. I bought an external GPS which is cheaper than the 3G iPad. I don't use 3G where I am at anyway.
Whichever son mows the lawn first gets my old iPad 1.

Haven't seen the gps issue here... ipad2 3G , but don't currently have it (3G) up. Flew from as far south as you can get to as far north as you can get today, with no issues. Turned it off and threw it is the back several times, only to retrieve it later and have a peek. Fore flight always put my little plane where I was pretty much immediately...

Never been much for this type of thing, but this thing is pretty flipping amazing.... too bad the canucks don't do fore flight or the likes anybody got a lead on some sort of Canadian mapping flight ware?

It's coming Rob. Canada doesn't have the digital sectionals ready. As soon as they do all us electronic guys will get them.

Kinda funny Mexico beat Canada in digital charts. I guess our buddies up north were to busy watching Vancouver get a hockey lesson from Boston.

Old one is 7X8 New one is 7X10 Old one is better in direct sun Windows XP 30GB HD. New one has windows 7, 64 GB HD, and a faster processor. $1300.00 with software.

Love love love my iPad (1). Really like the mygoflight kneeboard too -- I use it as an everyday case and it protects the iPad very well, the rails on the back give me a nice place to grip it and the device is easily removable and not bulky unlike a lot of the iPad cases out there. I use mine all the time for other than aviation, carrying around, reading, marking up documents, reading magazines (AOPA Pilot), books (Kindle and iBooks), listening to music, watching movies, taking notes, dealing with email, surfing web, catching up on BCP website, etc.

I have stopped carrying my laptop when I travel unless there is a real need (very rarely) for any of the other applications that are keyboard intensive or won't run on iPad.

Also have on it GPS430 guide, FAR/AIM, ForeFlight (which is fantastic), Log10Pro (my log book), and a whole bunch of other cool aviation and other apps.

What a fantastic device. And I think just the right size. I think the iPad 2 would be a little nicer because thinner, but I honestly wouldn't want the screen to be much (any smaller) -- I have a smaller version of it (iPhone) and the screen is much better for what I do.

I love it.
