Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Hey Courierguy,
Your pictures are great! That road into the reservoir looks like a hoot. The picture you called "gravel" looks like pretty good sized rocks to me. They look like they could shake you teeth loose. If you ever get up to North Idaho, I'd sure like to show you around my backyard too.

Hello Rob,
That airstip is called Warner's North. It is located on private property, but the owner will not arrest people that land there if he knows them (wink). Its a liability thing. The airstip is located on the south side of Mt. Spokane on the Idaho and Washington border.

Snuck away this morning for a flight around the high desert of Wyoming. Saw a dust plume in the distance and assumed it was a car on a dirt road. Turned out to be a herd of wild horses trotting across the sagebrush. Shows how dry it is here right now. If they had been at a gallop, they would have kicked up a full-blown dust storm!

A few shots from a new site I checked out the other day.
The 6500' level, the valley is 4500'Image
Now up at 7K, this little bump was landed from the point of view of the camera, pretty steep but also smooth, I hiked up from the 6500' landing, cheated, by walking it first. I landed about 30' from the top and taxied on up for the photo op. This steep the landing roll was less then 50' with little braking needed. The final approach required absolute minimun speed while turning 90 degrees, coming in from the right, as there was another bump in the way so I couldn't straight in it but had to come in sideways then hit the throttle to match the slope for the landing. Note the embedded land mine in the foreground, these are what nightmares are made of, a big rock is bad enough just laying on the surface, these embedded ones #-o Image Then on up to the top, or at least as high as I could find with a place to land. 8600', good terrain anyway, a big snowbank was 50' away, and while hiking it to get a better camera angle, I realized if I lost my footing I could have slid down, picking up speed, and then gone into a rock garden. This was the most dangerous part of the flight and I got the hell off the snow right quick! Funny how things can sneak up on you when you least expect it! It would have made an interesting accident report anyway.Image

I checked out the Flaming Gorge today, part in Wyo. and part in Utah. DEAD calm, in Wyoming, first time I've seen that!
I spotted this hawk on a rock outcropping, he appeared healthy and alert, but didn't move on my first fly by. He tracked me with his head, but otherwise just looked amused, so I went around again. Same deal, then I got the camera out. He continued to just smirk at me, so I came around one more time. I was very aware that if injured he may have been unable to fly and would never want to harass him, but he just seemed cool, calm, and collected.Image He didn''t act injured, or otherwise unable to fly off, more amused at the amatuer flyby. I was about 20' away when i took this picture, and he never did take flight.

Then, flying the "scenic route" from Little America to Cokeville (this part of Wyoming is still "under construction", think gravel pit combined with large industrial plant, that is the ambience...) way more fun to fly then drive, especially while still greened up and calm air, I came upon some real cowboys, doing what appeared to be a real roundup. Though all the real cowboys I know, making a living from pushing cattle, use ATV's.... these guys did it the old fashioned way. It may have been a dude ranch operation, lawyers and stockbrokers playing cowboy, you be the judge. Image Then this place, south of Cokeville: what happens when your builder doesn't follow the blueprints. That's a set of concrete stairs, going up onto the roof!Image

Today was one of those days we live for. Smooth air, 75*, nuttn but sun. Departed Troutdale for Lenhardt's with my buddy Jim in his Cessna 210 in tow. After coffee and talk it was onward to Tillamook where me friend parked the 210. Jim didn't want to fly it into PC so we took the Maule over. After the tour of the new property we had a good lunch at the Oar House. Next stop, back to Tillamook. Jim headed home and I continued up north to Nehalem Bay. There was another Maule there and a Lance Air go fast. Last stop before home was McMinnville to BS with Terry, he was doing an oil change on his 180.

Got the gas tank and heading to the airport

Didn't fly anywhere today, but the 75' seed drill I'm running makes a nice photo platform with a setting sun.

I made a flying date with my eight year old daughter a couple of days ago and was fascinated by seeing the flight through "her eyes" after we returned. Prior to leaving I handed her my iPhone and told her that she could be the camera operator. It was pretty cool to see her perspective and I love the smile on her face. It was hard to decide what to edit. That being said, it's kind of mushy memory making stuff for me but there's quite a bit of flying footage in it also so I wanted to share it with you all. Enjoy.

I got a call earlier this week for some future crane work at a cell tower site (once the access road is snow free). I told them "I'd check it out". 9,000' and just perfect conditions, cool and calm again, what a great streak of weather the last few days!Image

I loved your video, Clippwagon! We need to get our kids together soon! My daughter's 11, and like you and your daughter, we've done Father/Daughter trips in the plane every year since she was 4.

Great job! =D>
