The snow needs to be fairly SHALLOW to allow a definite takeoff at places like Vines! (like those guys get in MN) At cabin creek, the only significant snow depth was on the runway which is slightly depressed from the surrounding ground. Vines, being deeper in the canyon had deeper snow, but not the chest deep stuff that there was at Bruce Meadows. When going into Vines, I did several circuits landing downstream to pack the snow down. Landing downstream at Vines was a lot easier than landing downhill at Soldier and Cabin! Yes, you could just go and plunk it down normally the first time, but it seems a lot easier and quicker to compress the snow with the plane than do all that stomping.
