Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Well, after ten days I finally got to fly.
Went from Meadowlake to Longmont for cheep fuel then to Ft Collins Loveland. I had lunch at Nordy’s. They have a $9.95 lunch BBQ all you can eat and it’s phenomenal! If you have a chance to go for lunch there, go. After that, a little flying sightseeing over Horse tooth reservoir and CSU and then back to FNL to drop off my passenger. I made it back to Meadowlake in time for the sun to set. It was 3.1 after it was all said and done. And, I picked up 20 lbs of elk while in Ft Collins. Mmmmmmm.

I went up to KFTG to start my checkout in the Citabria 7KCAB they have. I've been missing flying taildraggers too much. I did two flights for a total of 2.3hrs. It went well, even after not taxiing, taking-off, or landing a tailwheel in 10 months! I didn't think to take any pictures until after we put it back in the hangar. Maybe I'll get some more later, haha.

I love the short bus in the hangar too!

Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. Geez HiC, If I knew you were taking a picture Cubscout and I would have at least smiled. :D

Great day of flying, winds were pretty much dead calm everywhere. Had a great time kicking back as Cubscout piloted my skywagon. Thanks for the bag of goodies CS. You really shouldn't have.

Like they said, it was a great day for flying. I went up in the 7KCAB again for 1.2hrs..would've been more but we got a late start. Clint is pretty much just hanging out in the back along for the ride. That Citabria sure makes me feel like I know how to fly a taildragger though...I think I'm cheating! But the winds have been really light too! Heading up again tomorrow for a few more hours!

One of these days I'll get pics while flying!

Fabulous moonlit flying last night. Full moon, fresh snow, not a single cloud anywhere in the sky. Plus, calm and not too cold. Surprised some friends on the ground who were camped out having a big bonfire- then followed rivers alongside mountains, nailed some T&G's on unlit runways, and chased Orion. Fun!

Thanks for the picture HiC! Yes it was chilly. I ended up doing 2 flights today for 2.8hrs overall...round and round the pattern working on wheel landings. Now to wait until next weekend for more fun! Bmurrish stopped by before my 2nd flight too. It was really fun having both of you guys stop in to say hi and hold up score cards for my performance!!!

Glidergeek and I flew to Bacon Strip Ranch, but the runways were still way to wet for our 182 and 180 to land. So we flew down to Amboy for lunch and played around the desert southeast of Amboy before heading back to Riverside and Fullerton.

Still lot's of snow up in Big Bear Lake, CA
Image

Bacon Strip Ranch was still pretty soggy

Fuel at Roy's. The pump hoses are pretty long if anybody is interested in mogas. I believe there's Ethanol in the fuel though.

On Friday (1/29), went to Idaho City, Bruce Meadows, Indian Creek, Thomas Creek, Mahoney Creek, Soldier Bar, Cabin Creek, Vines and Big Creek. Pretty lonely in the Frank Church this time of year! For you wheel guys, before the snow started falling again Saturday, Mahoney and Lower Loon would have been easily landable with even regular size tires - just a couple inches. Middle Fork Lodge has been keeping Thomas Creek Strip plowed, so didn't even want to touch down with the skiis down. Flying B and Bernard are completely clear of snow. A friend went into Bernard with his 182 Fri night and all was good - not too muddy or anything. Looked like at least one other person had been into McCall on the ski strip. Wonder who else has been out and about - Mike Doris Maybe?, but he usually just uses the runway with his hydraulics.

Matt,
What is vines like on ski's? I have never flown ski's but seems like places like that are pretty short without brakes. Does the snow need to be fairly soft or is it no big deal? Would you land Mile Hi on ski's?

Thanks
