I heard of people taking and burying four tires a couple ft under the ground(maybe in a square?) and tying their planes down really good by the wings and main gear then tie the tail wheel with a lot of slack and point them in to the wind. Said they went through 80 mph winds and the planes would sit there and fly on the ground!

Yea, I'll probably take the ol lady, (without the hot tub) and a couple of sleepin bags, throw em in the Cub and camp under the wing again. It's less than a mile walk from the airport into where everything is going on. There's not much at the airport, but you can call and someone will come out for some high priced fuel. It says no camping, but no one has ever bothered us.

Shit, how could it have been two years.. This senile ol coot's definitely losing it..

Glad you were able to save it! I've seen pictures of the trails from 1000#+ rocks that blow uphill out there! Im sure you have seen them flying over. any idea what the peak gusts were?
Blessed are the curious, for they shall have great adventures!

No, no idea, but strong enough to break off a few telephone poles.. Those rocks just slide across the dry lakes, when they are muddy or wet, that stuff turns really slick, but still takes a lot of wind even tho it's level.

I landed in Austin one time years ago, in a 170, and it was showing 60 on the airspeed when I was stopped, there was no way to turn away from the wind when on the ground, so I kinda hover landed on the ramp right by a tiedown space and sat there and flew it on the ground for quite a while until there was a slight lull where I got a little chance to slip out hanging on, and hook one chain at a time, diving back in to help ride out the gusts. The wind in Death Valley that day was way stronger than that tho, and I was really afraid to get behind the cable, to get in, because if it broke, the cable might really nail me.. Usually I love playin in the wind, and say "The wind is my friend!", but this kind is a bit much.. ha ha
