Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.

Trip to Utah

Postby Throttle Pusher » Wed Aug 31, 2011 4:00 pm

I'm looking to do a trip to Utah sept 28-oct 8th.
What I'm looking for is does anyone know what kind of weather to expect this time of year Temps etc..
Also is there a web site I can go to to find out what back country strips are closed.
I have the Fly Utah books, but I've heard that not all the strips are open.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ken,

That time of year it could be 70's and sunshine or cold with snow. Typically, however that is a great time to hit the Utah Backcountry as the temps are down and thus the density altitude is also. You can check the utah back country pilots website for updates on closed strips. That site does not get a lot of activity but usually posts updates of any significant runwy issues. http://www.utahbackcountrypilots.org Let me know when you are comming and maybe I can arrange to show you around.

All you can do is expect the unexpected. Where are you going? Should be 70's - 90's in the North and still hot 80 - 100 down around Moab. Nights get cold anywhere. Not unusual to snow that time of year too in the mountains. So just put your shorts on with your parka. That's what we do. :D

I'm looking to go down around Ogden and south from there. But really outside of a couple of places we want to camp at, were going to just have a lose schedule and go where looks good at the time.
Thanks for the info.

Trip update
The trip is still on,after all the trips that have been canceled this year I'm glad this one is still ago.
I should be leaving around the 27th of Sept.from Arlington and be back around the 8th of Oct. The plan at this point is to fly to Moab and stay at the Caveman Ranch the first day or two. This way I can go out and scope the area for possible camping sites. At this point I would like to camp at Mexican Mountain and Mineral Canyon , of course this all depends on the field conditions and the weather. I don't want to get flooded out of Mineral Canyon [-X I've hear it happens from time to time. From there who knows.
I'm really looking forward to this one.
Thanks for the help, and I'll post some pict when I get back.
