An-2

There are many type-specific websites out there, but if you want to talk C-180, PA-18, or DHC-2 with other members, this is the place.

The AN-2 engine is 1,000hp. I don't recall what they call it, but from what I understand it is a copy of the Wright R-1820 made under license in Russia & also I believe by PZL in Poland.
That Wright 1820 was the original engine for the DC-3, later ones were fitted with the P&W R-1830 with some upgraded to the Pratt R-2000. So, depending on power settings, the fuel burn should be similar to one side of a DC-3. 80 gph sounds high, I woulda guessed fuel burn at around 50 gph unless you're talking about WFO throttles.
Either way, it's way above my pay grade!

Where I live it's a 30 minute hop to town. So it burns 40 gallons...so what. 4700# useful, plus something like 16' lumber would fit in it, or room for 12 passengers. We pay .35/lb. for air freight, which would work out to be about $1400 loaded with freight or $1080 with passengers at $90 bucks one - way. I think I could run it for that given the fact that a nice one is $100K. Probably burn car gas just fine, too.

But, no need to worry, never happen in today's world. It is fun to think about, though. :D

I should correct my earlier statement...something did not sound right so I had to check my logbook...we flew for almost 2 hours averaging 80 mph and burned right at 80 gallons...that makes it right at 40 gph at 2mpg.

Sorry about that...should have checked my logbook before I made that first post.

I'm not sure if this is the same story as Mr Scout was talking about but I looked at one that had come over from Russia a few years ago. The story I got was that a pilot for Aeroflot was owed a bunch of money so he took it in airplanes. I thought he took ten but I can't remember for sure. Anyway, they flew them over to Oregon or Washington and he started selling them.

The guy that told me this story and another guy, both from Utah, bought two of them. They fabricated a fifth wheel hitch and mounted it on the tail wheels. Then hauled them down behind a pickup. He said "you should have seen the looks we got hauling them down the freeway".

One (blue one) ended up in Nephi, then it was in Spanish Fork right where you drove into the airport. Don't know where that one is now but I do know a guy who is partners on it. The guy that told me the story lives in Bountiful and was selling his (red one) for $18,000. I thought he said it had a 21 Gal/hr burn but I could be wrong. I hear you can buy new Chinese engines for around $8,000 for them but the problem is that they are only Experimentals here. I was wondering the other day if the red one was still up there?

Anyway they are huge and awesome planes! I wanted to buy one and take an old motorhome, gut it and build a flying camper. Maybe someday. I used to have a picture of an Airfield in Ukraine that had AN2's lined up down both sides of the runway just sitting there rotting. The grass around the planes and on the runway was about 4 feet high. Really Sad.

Here is some pics of the Blue one when it was in Spanish Fork (U77):

There used to be several AN-2's in various stages of disrepair parked at Auburn WA. There was a sign on one to the effect that if you were interested in buying one "call Uri". I believe that one of those from Auburn is the one now parked at Harvey Field.
We had a german guy living in our area about 14 years ago getting his commercial rating(s), who went to Poland & bought one and ferry-tanked it home across the North Atlantic along with a hired pilot. Unfortunately I never got a ride in it. When his Visa ran out he ended up moving to South America where he had plans of flying freight with it, but he could never make it happen- I don't know if it was a lack of aircraft certification down there or just what. I hear he finally went home to Germany but left the airplane behind. Apparently they don't use the Stewart System at the factory :P
whatever they do use just doesn't hold up well to being stored outside.

The covering on the one outside at Harvey is holding up better than I thought. The fabric problems on the rudder seems to be the result of someone hitting it with a tractor or something. The metal is torn where the fabric is separated.

Now the birds nests, guano, algae, and moss are a different issue.

There's one that's been sitting the southeast parking area at PAMR for a number of years. It looks like it's in pretty good shape but just sitting. I've never seen anyone around it doing anything. If anyone is interested I could ask around and see if it's for sale or not.....

Well, it's been a few years, but when I was passing through and met the owner (assuming it hasn't changed hands), he was a real gentleman, let me sleep in his hangar, gave me one of his tie-downs, a tour of his planes, etc, etc. There were several spray planes (Sorry, don't know the types- one Dromader??, plus several smaller ones), two Yaks, the AN-2, and a sweet 180 on amphibs. I think he had taken over the airport at Pembina as either the manager, or the property owner, or both. Hangar was spotless, and planes looked immaculate. Kind of operation I'd feel very good buying an airplane from, FWIW.

Just looked at the classified, and it looks like a different hangar from the one I remember. Quite possible it has changed hands, I guess.

DP,
I just spoke to my son. He said his friends dad hasn't sold it. I think it was down at "Vic's" aircraft sales (Fargo,ND) possibly....???? Heck I don't know. LOL
He has had it for quite awhile and I heard he had thought of putting a turbine on it at one time....but then we "hear" all kinds of things.
Anyways, that is one sweet looking AN-2!!! Too bad the infamous FAA wouldn't let them be used for much. I bet if they did you would see a bunch of them around.
WW

PS. I just bored so I gotta find something to ramble about on these sites. :) Heck we got dumped on here in DC!!! ANd they are saying possibly 20-25 more inches tomorrow!!! And I left MN for this????

I just watched episode 11 of Ice Pilots (great show). They delivered the water bombers to Turkey and are training the local pilots. In a few shots you can see 4 An-2's. Can't say they are flying them but maybe the Turks had some success with them.

Also, this guy saw one down in Baja. He is a quote from the Baja Bush Pilots board. "...if that is the Anatov I think it is, it is out of Alaska. Owner is a Baja Bush Pilot who has done CenAm with me as well as Burning Man. Aircraft has full living area including Honda generator, microwave, and all other full comforts of home. Jack @ BBP."

Look at these pictures. Seems that answers the question about burning auto gas. At least while in Mexico.

I've been inside more of those "Russian PZL copies" of the 1820 than I care to think of... let's just say they're a very rough copy of the 1820. The AN-2 is one cool plane...if you'd yank that piece of crap off the nose and put a real 1820 on there! It was the first plane I ever was in that had air brakes for the main gear...sounded like a truck when taxiing! The view from the cockpit is great, and room for about anything you would want to stuff in the back!

I saw this plane fly a number of years ago and was totally amazed at how fast it got into the air and how slow it was on landing.

All the instruments are in Russian.

It's also for sale and I believe is registered standard cat.
