How To Use the Shortfield.com Backcountry Airstrip Utility:
The airstrip utility is a portable web-based module for accessing the Shortfield.com database of airport information, which includes airport data, pilot reports, photos, and videos.

The utility defaults to the position of the last updated airstrip but you can find other airports by either:
  1. Clicking one of the airstrips in the "recently updated" list that appears at first load.
  2. Searching by name or identifier using the search field in the upper-right corner.
  3. Close any open dialog windows and pan around the map by clicking, holding the mouse button down, and "dragging" the map around.
To embed this utility in a forum post as a visual aid when discussing a particular landing facility, simply use the BBCode [airport] tag. Enclose the identifier of the airport you'd like to showcase in your forum post like so:

[airport]3U2[/airport]

There is a convenient "airport" button in the post editor to make this easier.

How To Contribute Airstrip/Airport Data:
The airstrip database relies completely on data submitted by pilots and adventurers, similar to submitting a PiRep (Pilot Report) to Flightwatch. If you have authoritative information about a particular airport, your contribution is great appreciated by the backcountry pilot community.

To update an airport already in the database:
  1. Login or register at www.shortfield.com
  2. Browse to/search for the airport you'd like to update
  3. Click on the appropriate tab for the type of data you'd like to provide (Description, PiRep, Photos, Video)
  4. Click the "Add" link, type or paste your data, and click submit.
  5. For PiReps, please include relevant time-sensitive or seasonal information like surface composition, moisture, roughness, obstructions, etc.
  6. For Descriptions, please include information that is more permanent in nature, like airport services, surrounding area, noise cosiderations, permanent hazards, etc.

To add an airport not already in the database:
  1. Send and email to chrisg@shortfield.com with the following information:
  2. Airstrip name
  3. Geographic coordinates
  4. Runway information (length, width, elevation, etc)
  5. A description of the airport if possible
